I’ve always been interested in Pilates. To me Pilates is like Yoga without the chanting and sage (the spice or the mystic).  I even have a Winsor Pilates workout tape that I’ve had for 6 years and never used.  But I’ve been meaning to.  I mean if  it’s good enough for Daisy Fuentes it&#8217;s good enough for me.</p>
<p>So I was very pleased last year (2007) when a friend of mine opened up a Pilates Studio on Long Island.  And I was game when she asked me to come do a session and be photographed. My friend’s studio, THE PILATES ABSESSION, employs the Pilates machines. The machines look like torture devices and sure enough my friend, Karen, tortured me. Don’t you worry though, if you go she’ll make sure your workout is strenuous but suited for your fitness level.  But we had an unspoken fitness challenge that had been brewing for a while.  She won. It was a blowout actually. Pilates is the truth. It definitely works. Karen is a mother of three and I would rather be back to back with her in a bar fight than with most guys I know. Let’s just say if Houdini did Pilates he would have survived that sucker punch to his belly.*</p>
<p>This gives me impetus to work harder and become a household name. How cool would it be to go to a web page and see Johnny Depp doing Hip Hop abs. But this blog is about Pilates and my foray into modeling. It’s official, I’m a male model. I hope one day that pic of me will be a trivia question like Cuba Gooding Junior getting his haircut in Coming To America…sans lines.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h2>What should I expect in my first session at The Pilates Absession?</h2>
<p><strong>If your joints are healthy and you are not experiencing any physical discomfort or pain:</strong><br />
Your first session is comprised of a postural analysis and goal setting. You will be introduced to the Pilates principles and essential movements and will begin to use the Pilates equipment such as the Reformer and Cadillac. You may also utilize stability balls, foam rollers, resistance rings and thera-bands.</p>
<p><strong>If you are experiencing chronic pain or have a medical professional&#8217;s referral:</strong><br />
Your first session is comprised of an evaluation of strength, flexibility, posture and a medical history assessment. The information gathered from the initial session will help to prioritize your Pilates training as well as determine your individual goals. Pilates really is for everyone when you have an experienced instructor.</p>
<h2>Will I be sore after my session?</h2>
<p>Pilates does not fatigue the muscles to exhaustion, rather it uses movement patterns, mental focus and muscle memory to build strength and awareness into the body. Pilates leaves you energized and while you may experience some soreness as your body experiences changes, you will not experience debilitating soreness. Muscle pain is caused by lactic acid build-up in the muscle, improper stretching, or tearing of the muscles. The no pain, no gain philosophy is just not congruent with Pilates; an exercise does not have to feel painful for it to be effective. Pilates works directly with the deepest muscles in the body, developing strength without the pain associated with conventional exercises.</p>
<h2>How soon can I expect to see/feel results?</h2>
<p>Joseph Pilates&#8217; mantra was, &#8220;In 10 sessions you&#8217;ll feel a difference, in 20 you&#8217;ll see a difference and in 30 you&#8217;ll have a new body&#8221; &#8211; (based on individual sessions, 3 times a week). Results are individual and dependent on one&#8217;s level of commitment. Clients report postural changes in their bodies very early in their practice.</p>
<h2>What makes Pilates different from other forms of exercise?</h2>
<p>Exercising on equipment designed by Joseph Pilates is unlike anything else you&#8217;ve experienced. With most exercise equipment it may feel as if you are pushing pieces of padded metal around. With Pilates you are dynamically moving &#38; stretching, fluidly moving the apparatus with you. You are simultaneously strengthening and stretching your entire body by concentrically and eccentrically loading the muscles. And best of all the exercises actually feel good. Focus is applied to the quality of the movement rather than the quantity of the movement; 5-10 properly executed movements are more effective than 20 haphazard movements. And don&#8217;t think you won&#8217;t sweat doing Pilates. Once past the beginner&#8217;s level, Pilates is very challenging work.</p>
<h2>How affordable is Pilates?</h2>
<p>Pilates is often known as affordable only to celebrities. We, at THE PILATES ABSESSION, believe in meeting the needs of each client. Therefore, we have set up a menu of classes that you can choose from. If you compare working with a personal trainer in a gym twice a week to working on Pilates equipment with us twice a week, you will find the latter of the two is by far the most affordable.</p>
<h2>How many sessions a week should I take?</h2>
<p>Most clients take 2 equipment sessions per week, and this is optimal. If this is impractical for you it is suggested taking 1 equipment class session a week and 1 mat or CARDIOLATES <sup>&#174;</sup> class. It truly depends on your goals, level of commitment, time, and budget. The closer your sessions are to each other the quicker you will learn and become autonomous in your practice and experience greater results.</p>
<h2>What if I can only make 1 session per week?</h2>
<p>Independence is encouraged and appropriate mat exercises and stretches can be taught to you so you can practice at home. Your goals are what is important and are considered when developing your program. The more diligent you are with the exercises, the greater the results.</p>
